Has your VW lost first or fifth gear?

W
e've been reuniting VW owners with their first gears for quite a while! Repair the sloppy, damaged or missing relay ball on your year model 2000 - 2007 MK4 and MK5 shift lever with this innovative CNC machined Delrin bell crank relay socket. When your relay ball bushing develops a flat spot or disintegrates you will find that it is hard to get into first gear without pushing the shifter stick hard to the left. You might even readjust your shifter to enable you to get first and second gears but that makes it darn near impossible to get fifth gear. The dealer alternative to this repair kit is to buy a new shifter shaft assembly from the dealer for around $100 and then drop the exhaust, heat shield and shifter box to install it. To install this part you only have to remove the center console* inside the cabin and snap the part into the steel bell crank to the left of the shifter stick. Just make sure to remove what's left of your old relay bushing before you install this part.

Fits the following years and models with five or six speed transmissions:

2000-2006 MK4 VW Golf, GTI and R32
2000-2005 MK4 Jetta, GLI or Bora
2000-2010 New Beetle
2000-2006 Audi TT (8N)
2000-2003 Audi A3 and S3 (8L)
2000-2005 Seat Leon, Cupra R or Toledo Typ 1M
2000-2004 Skoda Octavia Typ 1U
2006-2007 MK5 GTI, GLI, Jetta, Eos and B6 Passat

Install Hint:
The install video is the first one below. You will need to buy a high quality T25 Torx driver or socket to remove the pivot screw for the bracket that the FIGG installs into. The T25 screws are very tight and the heads are somewhat soft. If you strip out the head then you will need to drill the head off with a 13/64" drill bit. After that, the remaining shank of the 5mm screw will unthread easily. We are now providing an extra 5mm Allen screw in case you strip the head of the stock T25 screw. The replacement screw has a 4mm Allen drive.

US shipping: USPS 1st Class 2-5 day shipping is available for around $2.50. We ship from Texas.

*Please note that there are no further instructions given for this kit at this time. Removing the center console is covered in the Robert Bentley service manual.

First gear getter October 3, 2016

I recently replaced all the shifter bushings along with this one on a customers TDI and it made a night and day difference in shifting.  This part is more robust than the factory bushing and cheaper than buying the entire shift lever. A better part for less money.  That's a win win situation. Another quality part from diesel geek!

One of those ingenious things July 7, 2016

This little gem is one of those ingenious things that essentially improves on the initial design it is replacing... it won't wear out like the original part, is adjustable, it's easy to install and since I live near Austin it shipped to me the next day. What more could one ask for? I should have bought two just so I could marvel at the second one.

Thanks DieselGeek!

KMM

First Gear Getter June 21, 2016
Reviewer: Richard from Norfolk, Va
My daughter complained that she was having a hard time getting her '01 Beetle into first gear. A Google search brought me to Diesel Geek's web site. I bought the "First Gear Getter", and installed it. The write up on the website was spot on, including that it would likely be necessary to drill out the mounting bolt (and they include a new one!!)

Installation was easy, and the car shifts like new. Great product!!

Awesome product March 30, 2016

Fantastic way to repair the interrior shifter.  Restores gear selection. Well priced and less than stock plastic assembly which would require more work.

Excellent March 10, 2016

I used this 1st gear getter in my 2001 New Beetle to replace the biodegradable mushing that VW installed. It worked perfectly. It fit quite well. If you are careful you can use slip joint or channellock pliers to carefully press this into place. Awesome part. Now Diesel Geek should start making door panels, door pulls, dashboard parts, and all the other biodegradable parts that VW used.
