In pursuit of perfection:

There is nothing as important to the feel of your car as what you actually touch. This includes the seats, the steering wheel, and of course, the shifter. Many people have mentioned that installing a Dieselgeek Sigma Shifter should be the first mod added to a new car. In the pursuit to make our own cars the best they can be, we have created the finest short shifter with the best materials, engineering, and craftsmanship to transform the way your car feels and in turn how you feel about it.

Each and every Dieselgeek Sigma Shifter is made to our exacting specifications and tolerances by a collection of passionate machinists. As always, the Dieselgeek Sigma Shifter is guaranteed as long as you own your car. Country of origin: USA.

We are excited to offer you the best shifter we could possibly make, the Sigma Shifter. Our Sigma Short Shift Kit utilizes an all-aluminum front-to-back cable end with a race-proven steel spherical pivot bearing. Lesser shifters use a stock Audi/VW rubber insulated cable end which is optimized for economically assembling the car at the factory.

The side-to-side cable end is fortified with our Perfect Pivot bushings. The factory glass reinforced composite cable end body is ideal for the lightly loaded side-to-side cable. By using a performance modified stock cable end, the super slick adjustment function is retained. This makes adjustment, or readjustment, a breeze! The Delrin Perfect Pivot inserts do not have any free play which means they only rotate on our precision cable end pin. They do not flex side to side and will transfer motion without any losses.

Since the OEM cable ends have rubber damping parts and large tolerances, the shifter feel of all other shifters is nowhere near as solid or precise as our finest work, the Sigma Shifter. With the addition of our Sigma Shifter your car's shift mechanism will no longer feel like a cable-operated shifter, but more like a solid lever shifter from a high-performance rear wheel drive car. We designed the Sigma Shifter cable ends in the pursuit of shifting excellence and we succeeded! Getting the rubber out of the linkage has an unexpected and profound effect on shifter feel. The action becomes light yet very positive, giving your vehicle a precision feel that no other shifter can match.

The other difference between the Dieselgeek Sigma shifter and the competition is that our shifter is equipped with our Dieselgeek Slider. The Slider mates the front to back assembly with the side to side bell crank and controls left to right gate selection. We selected a very precise, long-lasting, self-lubricating structural plastic material guaranteed to last as long as your car. The cheaper factory white sliding piece found on all other short shift kits have large tolerances built in and is made of a plastic that will deteriorate rapidly with heavy use. This makes all other shifters less and less precise as time progresses. We have eliminated shifter degradation permanently with the Dieselgeek Slider. The performance difference can be felt on the very first 2-3 gear shift you make. You will love it!

Installation is most certainly a do-it-yourself mod for those of you who do not mind getting a little dirty. Every shifter can be installed easily within one hour. All parts are installed top-side in the engine bay. Call it an automotive bonding experience!

If you are having any issues shifting we would suggest replacing any bad shifter bushings prior to installing the Sigma shifter. The Mk4's are getting on up there in age and it is likely that one or more bushings needs to be replaced. If you have bad bushings you will not be able to adjust the shifter properly. You should watch this YouTube video and do the test shown prior to installing your shifter:

US Shipping: Free FedEx 2nd Day shipping to US addresses is included in the price but you have to pick that option when you check out. In most cases, FedEx will deliver on Saturdays, too!  We ship Monday through Friday from Colorado.

International shipping:  In these uncertain times we are now using the slightly more expensive but much faster 2-4 day FedEx International Priority service. FedEx will likely collect local taxes upon delivery.  Also, for Canada, the new USMCA trade agreement will reduce taxes and duties on this item.

More Details:

* Each quick shifter gives an approximate 30% reduction in throws for both directions. Do not be misled by other tuners claims of offering more reduction. This is the maximum reduction the shift cables will allow before they get overextended.
* Side to side shift throw reduction is included with every shifter. No expensive add-on!
* 45 minute install! You can do it yourself!
* Five speed Sigma Shifters fit all VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat 5 speed with chrome or silver shift weights. Seat and Skoda cars must have 1J0 711 051D or 1J0 711 051Q chrome shift weights (click for picture).

Will the Sigma Shifter fit my car? Yes, if it is a Late MK4 car with a chrome shift weight as described below.

Early MK4: Your car has a Black shift weight on top of the transmission. This includes all 1998 and 1999 New Beetles and all late 1999 GTI, Golf and Jetta. We no longer carry shifters for Early Cars.

early mk4 vs late mk4

Late MK4: Your car has a Chrome shift weight on top of the transmission. In general, all cars of year model 2000 and later are Late cars. This includes all 2000 and later GTI, Golf, Jetta, and New Beetle as well as Golf and Jetta City / Classico models from the Canada and Mexico market with 02J transmission. If you have a 2000-2001 car with round cable ends you will need to buy a single OE VAG cable end from the 2002 and newer cars. The VW part numbers for these cable ends can be one of the following: 1J0 711 761B, 1J0 711 761C or 5N0 711 761 <LINK> which we sell for cheap. DO NOT BUY an aftermarket cable end! They do not work!

Also fits 02R equipped Audi A1 and VW Polo with this linkage.

Great, a little stiff

Great upgrade, I enjoy the feel a lot. Makes my cable shifted car feel just like shifting a miata lol. My one complaint is it takes way more effort to shift gears now. My sisters mk4 has had the shifter rebuilt and feels a lot easier as a daily than my car with this kit. Still worth it.

Hi Luke -
Sounds like there's something amiss with the adjustment/install. A few things:

- Shorter throw = less leverage. There is necessarily some trade off between engagement effort and throw length.
- There is a break in period as the slider and the front to back plate bracket wear together and polish each other.
- If you're having more difficulty with 1-2 & R have a look at the 'fine tuning video' we posted on our Youtube channel.
- And finally there shouldn't be stiffness at all in the side to side direction. Usually the culprit here is corrosion in the shifter tube. We made a video 'Fixing a Stiff Side to Side VW Shifter Pivot' covering how to fix this but ultimately the fix is to diagnose what's dragging and correct it as that is not by design.

Make this your first mod!

Should have bought this 2 years ago when I got my mk4. You feel so much more connected to the car with this kit and it's much more enjoyable to drive. If you can spare the cost, stop thinking about it and just order it. And install was a breeze, I had bicep surgery 2 months ago and have very limited use of that arm and it was still only a 30-45 minute install.

Don't be worried about installing yourself

Like the title says don't be worried about the install took me an hour with running back and forth for tool from my garage. Also was having a hard shift from 2 to 3rd felt like something was blocking 3rd gear just took it for a lil drive after install and it goes in smooth. Im getting stuck in reverse a lil but if i wiggle the shifter it comes out of reverse so I’ll probably have to figure that out at a later date. Now i can shift 3rd and get to work effortlessly thanks diesel geek and big thanks to tyler who emailed me about the shifter issues

I wish I'd gotten to this earlier. Based on the getting stuck in reverse comment it sounds like your side to side cable adjustment might be a little off. The cable probably needs to come out of the cable end a thread or two. This video covers that in more detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xx4ZzrIqEU
